One of the most frequent questions we&#8217;re asked is &#8220;<em>When can I get my hands on Bash on Ubuntu on Windows?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve held-off giving a date until we were 100% sure it&#8217;s available \u2026 but that date is <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">NOW<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GabeAul\/status\/717759462258249728\">Gabe Aul has just announced<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2016\/04\/06\/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-14316\/\">release of the Windows 10 build #14316<\/a> to the Windows Insiders Fast-Ring.<\/p>\n<p>This build contains the first public release of Bash on Ubuntu on Windows and the underlying Windows Subsystem for Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>Installing Bash on Ubuntu on Windows<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Important: To run Bash\/WSL, <strong>you must be running a 64-bit version of Windows 10 on a 64-bit PC<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>If you do NOT see &#8220;Windows Subsystem for Linux&#8221; listed in the optional features, you are likely not running <b><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">a 64-bit version of Windows 10<\/span><\/b>, or are running a build of Windows 10 prior to #14316.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re upgraded to this new build, you&#8217;ll need to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/commandline\/wsl\/install_guide\">installation steps<\/a> summarized below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on Developer Mode: Settings | Update &amp; Security | For Developers | Check the Developer Mode radio button:\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/1-DevMode.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-62\" alt=\"1-DevMode\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/1-DevMode-300x187.png\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>From the start menu, open &#8220;Turn Windows Features on or off&#8221;:\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/2-features.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-72\" alt=\"2-features\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/2-features-193x300.png\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Scroll down and check the &#8220;Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta)&#8221; feature:\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/3-WSL.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-81\" alt=\"3-WSL\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/3-WSL-300x261.png\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Hit okay and reboot (required step)<\/li>\n<li>Once rebooted, open a PowerShell\/command prompt and run &#8220;Bash&#8221; and follow the simple prompts to accept Canonical&#8217;s license and kick-off the download of the Ubuntu image:\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/4-ubuntu.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-91\" alt=\"4-ubuntu\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2019\/02\/4-ubuntu-300x160.png\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>After download has completed, you&#8217;ll be able to start &#8220;Bash on Ubuntu on Windows&#8221; be sure to share your feedback via the channels below<\/li>\n<li>We do know of an issue that crashes settings if you&#8217;re running Windows 10 &#8220;N&#8221; SKU&#8217;s &#8211; we&#8217;re working on a fix for this problem in future builds<\/li>\n<li>In this build, Bash will show you running under the &#8216;root&#8217; Linux user account\n<ul>\n<li>This does NOT give Bash elevated permissions within Windows, unless you run Bash as Administrator<\/li>\n<li>This means that, by default, from within Bash, you will only have access to Windows files and folders that your current Windows user account has rights to<\/li>\n<li>In future builds, you&#8217;ll be asked to create a user account when installing Bash.
