{"id":1183,"date":"2009-03-22T09:52:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-22T09:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/buckh\/2009\/03\/22\/sorting-by-multiple-columns-in-work-item-tracking\/"},"modified":"2009-03-22T09:52:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-22T09:52:00","slug":"sorting-by-multiple-columns-in-work-item-tracking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/buckh\/sorting-by-multiple-columns-in-work-item-tracking\/","title":{"rendered":"Sorting by multiple columns in work item tracking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Recently I was showing someone the results of a bug query and sorting by more than one column in work item tracking in Team Explorer.&nbsp; When the person said he didn&#8217;t realize that feature existed, I decided it would be worth posting.&nbsp; This also works in Team System Web Access.<\/P>\n<P>To sort by more the one column, simply hold the Shift key when clicking the column header of the column you would like to sort next.&nbsp; If you want to sort descending instead of ascending, continue to hold the Shift key and click the header again to flip the sort ordering.<\/P>\n<P>In the screen shot below, I&#8217;m sorting first by Priority and then by Area Level 4.&nbsp; You cannot tell from looking at the column headers which column gets sorted first.<\/P>\n<P><A href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/03\/image_4.png\"><IMG title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/03\/image_thumb_1.png\" width=\"644\" height=\"216\"><\/A> <\/P>\n<P>This works in the 2008 version and newer&nbsp;of Team Explorer and Team System Web Access.&nbsp; I was using Team Explorer 2008 SP1&nbsp;in the screenshot above.<\/P>\n<P>Since I&#8217;m on the topic of subtle but useful features, there&#8217;s a handy way to <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/buckh\/archive\/2005\/08\/23\/455094.aspx\">diff files in version control by holding the Shift key and double clicking<\/A> on a pending change.<\/P>\n<P>Finally, did you know that you can <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/teams_wit_tools\/archive\/2008\/04\/09\/rich-text-in-work-items.aspx\">use the formatting toolbar in VS to insert rich text into your work items<\/A>?&nbsp; With TSWA it&#8217;s more obvious because the formatting toolbar is shown just above the text box.&nbsp; In TFS 2010, the work item editor in Team Explorer also shows the formatting toolbar with the text box.<\/P>\n<P><STRONG>[Update 3\/23\/09]<\/STRONG>&nbsp; Sunder Raman, now program manager for the TFS Reporting feature area, reminded me of a couple of great posts he wrote a year ago.&nbsp; Be sure to check these out for more useful&nbsp;work item tracking&nbsp;tips.<\/P>\n<UL>\n<LI><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/teams_wit_tools\/archive\/2007\/10\/30\/work-item-tracking-usability-improvements-in-orcas-part-1.aspx\">Drag and drop attachments, columns<\/A><\/LI>\n<LI><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/teams_wit_tools\/archive\/2008\/02\/08\/work-item-tracking-usability-improvements-part-2.aspx\">Multi-column sort, saving attachments, sort\/expand\/collapse history<\/A><\/LI><\/UL>\n<DIV id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:29c286d4-8af0-4e96-866b-dc9272819e96\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati tags: <A href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/team+foundation+server\" rel=\"tag\">team foundation server<\/A>, <A href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/work+item+tracking\" rel=\"tag\">work item tracking<\/A>, <A href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/team+system+web+access\" rel=\"tag\">team system web access<\/A>, <A href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/version+control\" rel=\"tag\">version control<\/A><\/DIV><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I was showing someone the results of a bug query and sorting by more than one column in work item tracking in Team Explorer.&nbsp; When the person said he didn&#8217;t realize that feature existed, I decided it would be worth posting.&nbsp; This also works in Team System Web Access.
