{"id":2121,"date":"2013-06-26T11:28:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T11:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/bharry\/2013\/06\/26\/a-few-more-visual-studio-2013-preview-features\/"},"modified":"2024-04-10T11:40:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T18:40:56","slug":"a-few-more-visual-studio-2013-preview-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/a-few-more-visual-studio-2013-preview-features\/","title":{"rendered":"A few more Visual Studio 2013 Preview features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/bharry\/archive\/2013\/06\/26\/visual-studio-2013-preview-is-available.aspx\">announced<\/a> the availability of the Visual Studio 2013 and Team Foundation Server 2013 previews.\u00a0 There are a couple of new features available with this preview that I\u2019d like to talk a bit more about.<\/p>\n<h3>Cloud Load Testing<\/h3>\n<p>Now that the Preview is available, you can try out our new cloud load testing experience.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been using it on the TFS team for the past couple of months and have run close to 100 load test runs.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been incredibly happy with how much more friction free the experience is.\u00a0 You\u2019ll need a Team Foundation Service account to use the cloud load testing but you don\u2019t have to use the account for anything but load testing if you don\u2019t want to.\u00a0 Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/tfs.visualstudio.com\">http:\/\/tfs.visualstudio.com<\/a> to sign up.\u00a0 You can use the Preview to create a load test and then open the Local.testsettings file as shown below and select \u201cRun tests using Visual Studio Team Foundation Service\u201d.\u00a0 Then you just run the load test.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1362.Capture-3_thumb_40FF60C4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15879\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1362.Capture-3_thumb_40FF60C4.png\" alt=\"Image 1362 Capture 3 thumb 40FF60C4\" width=\"644\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1362.Capture-3_thumb_40FF60C4.png 644w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1362.Capture-3_thumb_40FF60C4-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll see in Visual Studio as the load test runs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1346.Capture2_thumb_23C992ED.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15880\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1346.Capture2_thumb_23C992ED.png\" alt=\"Image 1346 Capture2 thumb 23C992ED\" width=\"804\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1346.Capture2_thumb_23C992ED.png 804w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1346.Capture2_thumb_23C992ED-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/1346.Capture2_thumb_23C992ED-768x335.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>***Update June 27*** You can find a more detailed &#8220;tutorial&#8221; You are returned to VS and the upper right hand corner now reflects \u201cyou\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/7360.CaptureSignedIn_thumb_100C838C.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15884\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/7360.CaptureSignedIn_thumb_100C838C.png\" alt=\"Image 7360 CaptureSignedIn thumb 100C838C\" width=\"244\" height=\"104\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By clicking on you name, you get a dropdown menu that enables you to get to your account settings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/6758.CaptureAccountSettings_thumb_755FE772.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15885\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/6758.CaptureAccountSettings_thumb_755FE772.png\" alt=\"Image 6758 CaptureAccountSettings thumb 755FE772\" width=\"644\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/6758.CaptureAccountSettings_thumb_755FE772.png 644w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/6758.CaptureAccountSettings_thumb_755FE772-300x186.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And clicking on the Visual Studio profile link, you can see and edit your profile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/0250.CaptureProfile_thumb_7E6C72F3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15886\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/0250.CaptureProfile_thumb_7E6C72F3.png\" alt=\"Image 0250 CaptureProfile thumb 7E6C72F3\" width=\"644\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/0250.CaptureProfile_thumb_7E6C72F3.png 644w, https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2013\/06\/0250.CaptureProfile_thumb_7E6C72F3-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So why do you want to sign in to Visual Studio.\u00a0 One compelling reason is a new feature called Roaming Settings.\u00a0 Visual Studio will use your online profile to allow you to roam your Visual Studio settings across machines.\u00a0 So when you log into a new machine VS will automatically sync your VS settings and customize the environment the way you like it.<\/p>\n<p>For the purposes of the Preview, you kind of have to sign in <a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2014\/02\/8228.wlEmoticon-smile_58CD4724.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15586\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2014\/02\/8228.wlEmoticon-smile_58CD4724.png\" alt=\"Image 8228 wlEmoticon smile 58CD4724\" width=\"19\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>.\u00a0 In order to make sure we got plenty of testing of the mechanism, we require you to sign in to the preview of VS 2013 within about a week.\u00a0 This is, in essence, how you get a \u201clicense\u201d for the preview release.\u00a0 Of course, once we start selling VS, you will be able to obtain your VS license the same way you always have \u2013 through MSDN product keys, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I think of what we have today as just scratching the surface of what we can do once all of VS can be aware of who you are and take advantage of cloud services to deliver you new capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Window 8.1 Build Images<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve updated our cloud build service to support Windows 8.1 images \u2013 which means that you can now build Windows store apps.\u00a0 By default you\u2019ll continue to use the older build image but you can opt in to use the new image.\u00a0 Go to the Builds tab in Team Explorer and click the options drop down and select \u201cManage Build Controllers\u201d.\u00a0 From that dialog, you can choose the Windows 8.1 based build pool.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re very excited to bring these improvements to you and look forward to your feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Brian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently announced the availability of the Visual Studio 2013 and Team Foundation Server 2013 previews.\u00a0 There are a couple of new features available with this preview that I\u2019d like to talk a bit more about.
