{"id":13085,"date":"2017-06-08T15:57:45","date_gmt":"2017-06-08T20:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/bharry\/?p=13085"},"modified":"2019-02-27T06:25:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T06:25:09","slug":"lets-make-some-hay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/bharry\/lets-make-some-hay\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s make some hay!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring is hay season and it puts a significant strain on my managing the balance between work and farm.\u00a0 For the past several weeks, I&#8217;ve been stealing away every spare minute I can to cut, rake, bale and haul hay.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve hayed about 75 acres and that yields one heck of a lot of hay.\u00a0 I&#8217;m almost done &#8211; just a few dozen more rolls to move from the fields to the barn (assuming I can find more space in the barn :)).<\/p>\n<p>I thought I&#8217;d share a picture to give a bit of a feel.\u00a0 This is one of my fields &#8211; about 25 acres.\u00a0 Each roll you see (and you can&#8217;t see all of them) is about 1,000 pounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/Hay2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13095\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/Hay2-1024x284.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1002\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might notice that, in the foreground, there aren&#8217;t many rolls (just one orphan).\u00a0 That&#8217;s a story in itself.\u00a0 One of the hard things about making hay is weather.\u00a0 Rain happening between the time you cut it and the time you roll it, is a big problem.\u00a0 The process of getting wet and drying bleaches the hay, drains the nutrients and potentially makes it moldy.\u00a0 Rain that happens right after you cut it is OK.\u00a0 Rain later is bad.\u00a0 One rain is recoverable.\u00a0 Two is pretty much a death sentence.\u00a0 Hay this season has been really hard because we&#8217;ve had a lot of very unpredictable rain.\u00a0 The field in the foreground got rained on twice :(.\u00a0 Ultimately, I just left it to rot and for the nutrients to just go back into the soil.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll go back and bushhog it to just chop it up to rot a little faster.\u00a0 It was probably 20 lost roles of hay.\u00a0 Makes me sad but there it is.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, despite the rain, it was a very productive hay year and I already have almost all the hay I need for next winter.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never been that far ahead before &#8211;
