down CodePlex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Almost 11 years after we created CodePlex, it\u2019s time to say goodbye. <\/span><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">We launched CodePlex in 2006 because we, like others in the industry, saw a need for a great place to share software. <\/span><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Over the years, we\u2019ve seen a lot of amazing options come and go but at this point, GitHub is the de facto place for open source sharing and most open source projects have migrated there. <\/span>\n<a><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">We migrated too. <\/span><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">As many of you know, Microsoft has invested in Visual Studio Team Services as our \u201cOne Engineering System\u201d for proprietary projects, and we\u2019ve exposed many of our key open source projects on GitHub (<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/vscode\"><span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;font-family: Calibri\">Visual Studio Code<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/TypeScript\"><span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;font-family: Calibri\">TypeScript<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/dotnet\"><span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;font-family: Calibri\">.NET<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Microsoft\/CNTK\"><span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;font-family: Calibri\">Cognitive Toolkit<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">, and <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/opensource.microsoft.com\/\"><span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;font-family: Calibri\">more<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">). <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">In fact, our GitHub organization now has more than 16,000 open source contributors \u2013 more than any other organization \u2013 and we\u2019re proud to partner closely with GitHub to promote open source.<\/span><\/span>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/msoss.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"287\" height=\"249\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12926\" alt=\"msoss\" src=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/msoss.png\" \/><\/a>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Over the past few years, we\u2019ve watched many CodePlex projects migrate.\u00a0<\/span><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">During the same period, we\u2019ve had to address several issues, including a spam epidemic over several months in 2015, as spammers sought to take advantage of the CodePlex.com domain to boost their illicit activities. <\/span><span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">We\u2019ve also seen a substantial decrease in usage: as of this writing, less than 350 projects saw a source code commit in the last 30 days. <\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #2f5496;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri Light',sans-serif;font-size: 16pt\">The shutdown plan<\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">So, it\u2019s time to say goodbye to CodePlex.\u00a0 As of this post, we\u2019ve disabled the ability to create new CodePlex projects.\u00a0 In October, we\u2019ll set CodePlex to read-only, before shutting it down completely on December 15<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000\">, 2017. <\/span><\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #2f5496;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri Light',sans-serif;font-size: 16pt\">The CodePlex archive<\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">We\u2019ll take a final, complete backup of the site before shutting down and decommissioning the existing CodePlex site and servers.<\/span><\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">At that time, CodePlex.com will start serving a read-only lightweight archive that will allow you to browse through all published projects \u2013 their source code, downloads, documentation, license, and issues \u2013 as they looked when CodePlex went read-only.\u00a0 You\u2019ll also be able to download an archive file with your project contents, all in common, transferrable formats like Markdown and JSON.\u00a0 Where possible, we\u2019ll put in place redirects so that existing URLs work, or at least redirect you to the project\u2019s new homepage on the archive. And, the archive will respect your \u201cI\u2019ve moved\u201d setting, if you used it, to direct users to the current home of your project.<\/span><\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">There isn\u2019t currently any plan to have an end date for the archive.<\/span><\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;color: #2f5496;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri Light',sans-serif;font-size: 16pt\">Migrating your data<\/span>\n<span style=\"margin: 0px;line-height: 105%;font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">We\u2019re providing two first-class ways to get your data out of CodePlex.\u00a0 First, we\u2019ve partnered with GitHub to provide a streamlined import experience to help you bring your CodePlex source code, license, and documentation to GitHub.\u00a0 A migration tool for issues is also in the works and will be available soon \u2013 we\u2019ll update this blog post with more details when it\u2019s available.\u00a0 And, we\u2019ve added a new option to your project to set an \u201cI\u2019ve moved\u201d banner on your project that will direct your users to your new home.
