Announcing preview of new high performance computing capability: H-Series VMs

Steve Michelotti

Late last year,  we announced that H-Series virtual machines were coming to Azure Government to support high performance computing (HPC)  workloads. I’m excited to announce that H-Series VMs are now in preview in US Gov Arizona . Customers can leverage this new capability for any unclassified workload including ITAR and FedRAMP High. These VMs support complex scientific and engineering workloads whether its modeling the next military aircraft  or doing molecular level modeling to understand diseases.

The addition of H-Series adds to the existing HPC capabilities on Azure Government which includes:

  • Azure Batch – job scheduling and compute pool management service that helps developers easily scale their compute-intensive workloads to tens, hundreds, or thousands of virtual machines without having to manage the infrastructure
  • NC-Series – VMs powered by NVIDIA Tesla® K80 GPUs, providing the compute power required to accelerate the most demanding HPC and AI workloads

H-Series VMs are available in six different sizes, all based on Intel E5-2667 V3 3.2 GHz (with turbo up to 3.5 GHz) processor technology, utilizing DDR4 memory and SSD-based local storage. H-Series also features a dedicated RDMA backend network enabled by FDR InfiniBand network, capable of delivering ultra-low latency. RDMA networking is dedicated for MPI (Message Passing Interface) traffic when running tightly coupled applications.

With these processing speeds and ultra-low latency, combined with the existing HPC capabilities of Azure Government, you’ll be able to power through advanced workloads in record time.

If you’re a current customer interested in using our new VMs to run your HPC workloads, you can request a H-Series quota via the Azure Government portal.
